Needs less washing than you think

Not washing wool too often might be the most important step in making your wool garments last. Wool has amazing antibacterial and dust-repellent properties, meaning it requires much less washing than other materials. When properly cared for, items like winter jumpers may only need to be washed once or twice a season.

Refresh
The simplest way to maintain the performance of your winter knitwear is to let it rest for a day between wears. This means leaving it on a bed or chair to air out and allow for the fibres to regain their natural shape and properties.

Spot clean
If you happen to get a stain on your woollen jumper, don’t wash the entire garment. Instead, apply a drop of washing liquid to the spot and rinse with water, avoiding soaking the whole jumper. Be careful not to agitate the fabric too much to avoid damaging the fibres.

Hang up while in shower
Our favourite method is hanging up the clothing in the bathroom while taking a morning shower. It’s an easy and effective way to refresh wool garments. Since wool fibres are sensitive to water and open up in humidity (similar to how people's hair reacts), the steam from the shower will open the fibres and refresh the garment just before you wear it that day. This technique is also excellent for removing wrinkles and is particularly useful when traveling.

Wash by hand

When a full wash is needed, the best way to clean wool garments is by hand. A simple wash in cool water with a gentle laundry liquid is ideal for removing oils and dirt from your woollen clothing. Remember to wash it inside out and not to wring your knitted garments; instead, gently squeeze out the water. Some clothing can only be dry cleaned, but if in doubt, always follow the instructions on the care label.

No dry ironing, tumble drying and no direct sunlight

Just as our hair can be damaged by dry heat, wool clothing should never be ironed without steam to avoid burning the fibres. The best way to remove creases from a wool garment is to steam it or leave it in a humid environment for a while. Do not tumble dry wool clothing. Additionally, wool should not be left in direct sunlight for extended periods, as this can cause discoloration.

Storing

A general rule for all garments is that knitted items should be stored folded to avoid losing their shape. On the other hand, woven garments should ideally be hung to prevent creases. Since wool is a protein fibre, it can attract moths, so it's important to be mindful of how you store your woollen clothing. For longer-term storage, ensure that garments are clean and dry. It's also helpful to add moth repellents, such as cedarwood or lavender sachets, to your wardrobe.
